Program Description
Motivational interviewing has demonstrated efficacy for helping patients change a number of different health behaviors. This presentation will provide a better understanding of how to incorporate the underlying spirit of motivational interviewing into their interactions with patients and will help the participants to recognize effective motivational interviewing skills.
Upon completion of this Webcast, participants will be able to:
- Discuss how the spirit of motivational interviewing supports patient-centered care
- Describe how reflective listening and eliciting change talk can help empower behavior change
- Recognize effective skills for responding to resistance and eliciting change talk
Get to know Dr. Michael Burke
Dr. Burke has a Masters degree in Human Services from Lincoln University and a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Rutgers University. He is the Clinical Coordinator for the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Dependence Center that has treated more than 38,000 people to help them stop using tobacco since it opened in 1988. He is certified as a Tobacco Treatment Specialist, a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers and the current president of the Association for Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence.
Dr. Burke has 20 years of clinical experience and has been an investigator and principle investigator on grants designed to train tobacco treatment specialists, to educate health-care providers and community members to effectively address tobacco dependence, and to integrate tobacco specific education into public health curriculums through distance learning methods.
