Literacy and Health and Cardiac Rehab: Why should you care? And What can you do?
There is a direct link between literacy level and health. Limited literacy affects a person's ability to effectively use health services, take medications, and understand other information provided to them regarding their health.
The International Adult Literacy Survey (IALS) estimates that 22% of adults in Canada have difficulty in tasks no more complex than determining the maximum number of days they should take a medication by simply looking at the label. An additional 26% of Canadians can only deal with material that is simple, clearly laid out, and put in familiar contexts (Statistics Canada & Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, 2005). Therefore, everyday health care professionals in cardiac rehabilitation programs, assess, treat and provide health information/patient education to patients that have limited literacy. Misunderstanding this information due to limited literacy could lead to harm and the need for further treatment.
Health care professionals may become frustrated with the lack of improvement in patient’s conditions and make assumptions that the patient is not motivated when the real issue is one of literacy.
Learning Objectives
Following the presentation, participants will be able to
1. Describe how limited literacy impacts on cardiac rehabilitation
2. Identify the barriers faced by patients living with limited literacy and cardiac conditions in receiving cardiac rehabilitation
3. Identify specific strategies to reduce some of these barriers in their own clinical practice.

The Value of Group Patient Visits in CDM & Cardiac Rehab
Group patient visits are an effective way of supporting patients to manage their chronic conditions by providing information, monitoring, advice and hands-on care within a group setting. The webinar would be designed to teach health care providers to identify the benefits of group visits for their practice, determine populations suitable for group visits, and direct them to resources to plan, conduct and evaluate group visits.
